Background of the study
Traditional institutions have historically played a vital role in conflict resolution and community development by leveraging indigenous knowledge, social norms, and community solidarity. In Eket Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, these institutions remain influential in mediating disputes and facilitating local development initiatives (Anyanwu, 2023). They provide culturally relevant solutions and foster social cohesion in a rapidly changing socio-economic landscape. As modern governance structures sometimes fail to address localized issues effectively, traditional conflict resolution mechanisms continue to serve as an important complementary system. This study examines how traditional institutions contribute to conflict resolution and community development, exploring the mechanisms they employ and their impact on local governance. The research considers both the strengths and limitations of traditional practices in addressing contemporary challenges, and how these practices can be integrated with formal development initiatives (Udo, 2024; Eme, 2025).

Statement of the problem
Traditional institutions in Eket face challenges in addressing conflicts due to the pressures of modernity and external influences. Despite their longstanding role in conflict resolution, their effectiveness is increasingly questioned. This study aims to critically assess their contribution to community development and dispute resolution (Anyanwu, 2023).

  • To evaluate the role of traditional institutions in conflict resolution.

  • To assess their impact on community development.

  • To propose ways to integrate traditional and modern conflict resolution strategies.

  • What impact do these institutions have on community development?

  • How can traditional practices be integrated with modern governance systems?

Research Hypotheses

  • H2: There is a positive relationship between traditional conflict resolution methods and community development.

  • H3: Integrating traditional and modern systems improves overall conflict management.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the importance of traditional institutions in conflict resolution and community development, offering insights for policy makers to foster a more inclusive governance model in Eket (Udo, 2024).
